Healing Trauma with Reiki

Mikao Usui developed Reiki deriving the term from the Japanese words rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, which refers to the vital life force energy.

While it is believed for there to be more than seven energy centers or Chakras, we will highlight them. Each energy center corresponds places in the body, element, emotions, as well as sounds (key notes), and colors. It is believed that each corresponding chakra was developed at particular ages and due to events such as Trauma, some chakras may become overactive or underactive that can manifest in many forms and presenting complaints such as low self-esteem.

The goal of Reiki is to promote self-healing and balance mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. This technique is a wonderful practice to support one’s own healing journey. Similarly to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (See image below), we want to balance the chakras starting from the bottom (Root) up towards the Crown.

Trauma-Informed Yoga

Yoga in Sanskrit means to "join" or "yoke". One of the practices to support persons being joined in mind, body, and spirit is through the physical practice or poses in yoga known as Asanas.

Dissociation, the disconnection of the mind, body, and present surroundings is a common trauma response. Yoga is a practice not to replace therapy, but rather a practice that supplements the therapy process in working with clients.

David Emerson, E-RYT, founder and director of yoga services at the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, MA worked with van der Kolk on a study funded by the National Institutes of Health assessing the impact of yoga on individuals with complex trauma and demonstrating a clinically significant impact.
